Stuff I’ve read in the last month or so…

Captain Alatriste and Purity of Blood – Arturo Perez-Reverte – inspired by Dumas’s Three Musketeers, a cracking take on Spain of the 17th Century – dominated by pride, intrigue and swordplay! On the surface, all about swashbuckling, but underneath a deep probe of life under the inquisition – challenging religious fundamentalism of any variety…

The Battle – Alessandro Barbero – one of the very best histories of the Battle of Waterloo that I’ve ever read. refreshing in many ways, in that you really get a sense of indeed how ‘near run a thing’ it was…

The First Casualty – Ben Elton – Elton has a tremendous ability of making his novels say things that we need to hear – in this case the futility of any form of warfare…

Seeing – Jose Saramago – awesome novel on the failings of democracy in the 21st Century. A whole city decides to vote using blank votes…without any kind of discussion amongst the voters. Those in power use more and more desperate measures to force the ‘blankists’ to realise their mistake…to no avail…

Foe – J.M. Coetzee – just part way through this one – interesting take on the Robinson Crusoe story…

The Nazis – Laurence Rees – chilling account of development of the Nazi Party, it’s brutal reign of terror across Europe and it’s final disintegration…

Sound of Laughter – Peter Kay – not the greatest literary achievement in history, but a fun account of how Kay got to where he is today…

Commando – The Dirty Dozen – when I was younger I couldn’t wait each month to get my copies of the new Commando magazines – great comic books full of heroic Allies and dastardly Nazis! Ye Gods! Himmel!

Been a busy month – still working through Emergent Churches…lots to post on this when I remember to do so…!

  1. Ben Elton – Have you tried his new(ish) book chart throb yet? Really good read and a great poke in the eye for the ‘TV Talent Contest’ industry!
