Some reflections…

It’s been a few days since the last time that I wrote. Lots has happened since then. Sunday, we went up to an SA church in the north of the region known for being very large and very traditional. Sadly, they’ve virtually lost a whole generation from the church, but now they’re beginning to think through some of the reasons why. Incredible to see the recognition that there hasn’t been enough emphasis on discipleship coming from people my age. God is certainly reforming that church and it’s exciting to be able to help to guide them as they follow his prompting.

Other than that, been doing the whole door-to-door collecting thing. Not going too bad really – I try to be positive where I can. Some people are saying that they’d give to anyone but The Salvation Army – but I can never engage them to find out why! I wonder if our ‘legendary’ public facade is cracking a bit. Maybe it’s just that the war generation who experienced the Army at it’s most servant hearted is fading away to be replaced by people who don’t really have a clue who we are. On top of that is the fact that many of our churches are so far divorced from the social action and mission which won us such respect (and opposition!) in the early days, which means that the community they’re in don’t see them other than when they’re knocking on the door asking for money. Well, that could be one of the reasons…

Met up with an old friend who is fairly high up in TSA – interesting to see and hear what’s going on at HQ level. But good to know that there are some key people in key positions – people who are desperately listening to God’s whisper and searching for the signs of the kingdom within and without our movement.

Managed to meet up with one of the key young guys in the region this pm. Was really good to be able to spend time with this guy, who has real potential that needs to be encouraged and developed. I love this part of the job – getting alongside people and walking with them.

Got ‘The Cost of Discipleship’ by Dietrich Bonhoeffer today – supposed to be one of the books on growing in God. I’m going to try to use it as a foundation for my devotions. I’m trying to develop a pattern for myself that goes beyond the ‘scratching the surface’ and explores new depths. If you read this – hold me accountable on this one!
